Job Description

The System Administrator is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, maintenance and patching of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure for our Microsoft Windows platform. This person participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. The System Administrator ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures comply with internal and external standards and security requirements. This position also manages Active Directory, group policies, and administrative tools such as SCCM/Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager.

Examples of Work Performed:

Coordinate with County IT to provision and update servers and our Active Directory environment. 

Provide level II guidance to the desktop support team for application delivery and group policies.

Provide the Chief Information Officer with asset reports as required.

Engineering of solutions for various project and operational needs.

Install new or rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project or operational requirements.

Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.

Contribute to and maintain system standards.

Research and recommend innovative, and where possible, automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.

Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.

Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.

Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary.

Provide escalation support per request from various sources; investigate and troubleshoot issues.

Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted parties.

Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure or add new services as necessary.

Other tasks as assigned by the Chief Information Officer.

Education and Training Guidelines

Bachelor’s degree in business management, business administration, information technology, computer science, management information systems, or a closely related field.

Bachelor’s degree may be substituted upon demonstration of increasing experience and supervisory roles within the Information Technology field.

Minimum of four years related work experience.

Experience in problem resolution with IT systems and individuals.

Experience using MS SCCM or MS Endpoint Manager.

Competencies

Ability to interact with clients in a clear, concise, and professional manner.

Familiarity with a majority of the following:

Microsoft Windows Server Datacenter 2008 R2

Microsoft Windows Server Datacenter 2012

Internet Information Server (IIS)

Active Directory or LDAP

Solid understanding and working knowledge of complete systems development and deployment lifecycle and of all facets of systems administration in a large-scale IT operations unit.
